An AI use protocol must be annexed to your papers as specified below.
Use of generative AI writing protocol
You must keep track of every prompt you write for each AI you use. If you always use the same AI, you may just give its name at the beginning of the protocol; if you use several AIs, you must specify the relevant AI name for every prompt.
One major principle must guide your use of AIs: never use anything the AI gives you (whether facts, quotes or references) without checking its validity! AI statements and references must be checked independently using search engines, including newspaper archives (like the Guardian) and university library catalogues and resources. The added benefit of this validation process is that you will do some additional personal research that will help you bring more depth to your paper.
- Copy and paste the prompt you have used and indicate in a few lines what in the AI’s answer you have used and how. You must include a short description of the steps you have taken to validate or correct the bits of AI answer you have used (indicate which sources have enabled you to do so).
- What next prompt (your use of) the AI’s answer has given rise to? Copy and paste the content of this new prompt and indicate in a few lines what in the AI’s answer to this new prompt you have used and how. You must include a short description of the steps you have taken to validate or correct the bits of AI answer you have used (including the references of the sources that have enabled you to do so).
- Continue writing your AI protocol by starting again from point (1) or (2) as appropriate.
Use of AIs as language and style assistants.
Some AIs, like DeepL Write, are specialized in helping you improve the quality of your writing (grammar, style, level of speech). If you use AIs in that way, you should only mention:
- The name of the AI(s) you have used
- The paragraph numbers of those paragraphs in which the AI has helped you improve or made you change more than one fifth of the paragraph’s word count.
