On 20th December 1576, Archbishop of Canterbury Edmund Grindal wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth I, protesting her decision to suppress prophesyings. The letter gives historians some food for thought concerning the royal supremacy in Elizabethan England. In this letter Grindal makes several demands of the Queen, one of them being
that, when you deal in matters of faith and religion, or matters that touch the church of Christ …, you would not use to pronounce so resolutely and peremptorily, quasi ex auctoritate, as ye may do in civil and extern matters; but always remember that in God’s causes, the will of God, and not the will of any earthly creature, is to take place.
… I trust in God, your Majesty will always humble yourself under his mighty hand, and go forward in the zealous setting forth of God’s true religion, always yielding due obedience and reverence to the word of God, the only rule of faith and religion. And if ye so do, although God hath just cause many ways to be angry with you and us for our unfaithfulness, yet I doubt nothing, but that for his own name’s sake, and for his own glory’s sake, he will still hold his merciful hand over us, shield and protect us under the shadow of his wings, as he hath done hitherto.

Il faut de nouveau me rendre un commentaire de texte sur la citation en veillant à améliorer la première version que j’ai corrigée. Ce commentaire doit vous mener à une discussion (la partie nouvelle de cette deuxième étape du travail) du caractère emblématique de la Réforme anglaise dans son ensemble des préoccupations de Grindal et de la situation qu’il commente dans la citation.
Je recommande vivement à ceux qui n’ont pas assisté à la visioconférence du 9 avril de regarder l’enregistrement du cours.
